James ‘Jay’ Rhodes Jr is the son of Tony Stark’s best friend, aka Rhodey. Oh don’t look so surprised, it was only a matter of time before this ad happened. Since Jay and Antigone’s parents were bffs, these two grew up together, along with the likes of Steve Barnes
and Connor Coulson
. While Jay can be something of a big believer in things like fate and destiny, he is also just about as level headed as they come and puts a lot of stock in good old fashioned hard work and perseverance.
Growing up Jay had to play mediator a lot, especially between Tigs and Steve who tended to fight with some frequency. He’s always been something of a balance between the varying extremes of most of the A-Kids. It’s very likely that he followed in his father’s footsteps and joined the airforce when it came time to decide what to do with his life. However, he probably did so in the belief that one day he and Antigone would take over their parents’ roles in the Avengers. Between the way Iron Man died and the destruction of both the Avengers and SHIELD this never came to pass. When Tigs burst that bubble of hope by insisting she would never iron-suit up it may or may not have broken Jay’s heart and they haven’t spoken in a decade.
Out of all of their childhood friends, Jay is probably the only one who actually understands and even respects Connor’s decision to work for Division. He thinks Coulson might be a tad crazy given all the rogue behavior and suicide missions, but he respects the work ethic and Connor’s dedication to trying to make the world a better place. While Jay is the level headed mediator type, he doesn’t like being called or otherwise perceived as a coward and as a child that lead to him accepting some outrageous double dares and challenges.
Note, if you want Jay to be the new Falcon... well it's kind of the main reason we picked Mackie.
“You know, I think you ought to get him some help. He seems to be really hung up on super heroes' sex organs.”
