The heroes of yesterday are dead and gone. Division and the Mutant Control Enforcement Agency (MCEA) saw to that. This dystopia we live in is the result of one anti-mutant hate crime that sparked the third world war. The law now requires mutants to register, to spend the rest of their lives being a number on a file with a tracking device on their wrist or in their bloodstream.

For a while, the children of fallen heroes started to work in the shadows as the new X-Men. Not all that long ago, the latest incarnation of the X-Men was brought down in flames by Division's efforts. Team members captured, Agents killed, Cosmic fire everywhere... It seems as though the days of the X-Men have come and gone once again. Or have they?

Notice: Human Division employees are still much needed, even if they're depowered mutants. We would also love to see more MHA, Morlock and Purifier affiliated characters.

DATABASE FILE #0323462 MUTANT, OFF GRID
JEMIMA ROSE DREYFUS
25 | OFF GRID | ODEYA RUSH
ACTRESS | SIREN MIMICRY & BEACON EMISSION
" Oh, oh, the siren sang so sweet and watched the sailors going down Oh, oh, you talk to me in siren song; yeah, anyone would drown. "
  • Siren Mimicry
Jemima has the ability to enthrall people with her voice. When using her powers, her speech becomes compelling. Usually, this takes the form of adoration and a willingness to acquiesce to basic requests. Her voice makes her beautiful and attractive in the eyes of listeners. It feels euphoric to them when they obey her compulsions. Jemima calls the people under her influence thralls. Using her powers also feels good for Jemima--her body warms and she feels some of the euphoria experienced by her thralls.

She can amplify this ability slightly through physical contact. However, speech is still required and she cannot enthrall someone by touch alone.

In recordings and images, her power leaves a residual imprint that gives her likeness a je ne sais quoi that many find alluring. She has no control over this element of her powers--it's like a shadow or a memory.

    Beacon Emission
Once Jemima has used her siren mimicry powers on a thrall, they are subject to her beacom emission. This power does not require the use of her voice, but is rather a mental call. It pulls those who have recently been enthralled towards Jemima’s location.

    Personality
Although Jemima has many character flaws, she also has a few strengths. Namely, she has the ability to be independent confident in nearly every situation. An added benefit of her powers is that they give her usually aloof personality charm and warmth. She is very different when she’s ‘on’ versus ‘off’ in terms of powers.
  • Siren Mimicry
Jemima’s powers are most impacted by two things: the number of thralls and the nature of her requests. Groups larger than ten individuals drain Jemima quickly. Likewise, compelling someone to do something they wouldn’t normally do (or that harms themselves) takes quite a bit of energy. For example, enthralling five fans to get them excited about a meet and greet is low energy. Compelling those same five thralls to punch themselves in the face would cause Jemima to pass out.

Overexertion causes physical symptoms, such as fainting and bloodshot eyes (which is why she is often pictured in sunglasses). When Jemima overuses her powers she also receives a warning headache before she eventually passes out. If she pushed herself too far, Jemima could put herself into a coma.

Also, it should be noted that physical touch amplifies her ability--but only when in contact with one other person. Her amplified range is overtaxed if she tries to physically touch and enthrall groups of people, giving her an instant warning headache.

    Beacon Emission
Her mental call can only be used on current or former thralls. The effectiveness of this beacon depends on how recently a subject has been enthralled. Just like her siren mimicry, there is an approximate ten thrall limit to her beacon emission. Also, Jemima must be conscious for her powers to work. She cannot compel thralls in this way--only call them to her location.

    Emotions
Like many mutants, her emotions also play into Jemima’s overall control of both her siren mimicry and beacon emission. Her powers get the best of her when she is feeling extreme levels of emotion. Because of the addicting nature of her powers (warm fuzzies and euphoria), it is very tempting for Jemima to use her powers. Her overall control of them varies greatly on the day and she has a habit of slipping in to her siren voice during caual interactions.

    Personality
Jemima was raised a spoiled, emotionally neglected child. She carries her childhood faults with her into adulthood--conceit and a general disdain for just about everyone else. In secret, she has also been known to throw a tantrum or two--even at twenty-five. Her true colors are one of the main reasons that she keeps so few staff on her team. That, and it’s exhausting to force people to love her all the time.
  • Jemima was born August 17th, 2013. Jerard Dreyfus and his wife Rosalie decided to raise their daughter in the shadow of the Hollywood sign. Her family got out of LA before it was bombed to pieces and relocated to Las Vegas. Due to frequently traveling parents, Jemima never really felt settled in--she spent a lot of time on the road with her mother. Movie sets felt more familiar than their apartment in Nevada. She had an army of nannies and tutors that rotated through her life until the war made everything too expensive.

Public school became necessary at the age of fourteen. Teachers would go on to describe Jemima in her report cards as an average student who was aloof and antisocial. After she became famous, they ‘always knew she would be a star’ and seemed to remember a very different young woman from the maladjusted youth they had taught. Jemima made few friends in her two years at high school---but her superiority complex didn’t let her miss them.

With a soap opera star mother and a producer father, there was no way that Jemima Dreyfus wouldn’t be pushed and shoved into the spotlight. As a baby she did commercials, as a child she did junior beauty pageants, and when she was a teenager her mother became obsessed with made for TV movies and after-school specials. These auditions consumed her brief stint in public high school.

It was at an audition for an after-school special that Jemima discovered her powers. During the war, several major networks launched their own anti-mutant serials and Jemima’s mother was obsessed with her daughter starring in one (they were easy money at the time). In that spirit, Jemima was picked up early from school that day. She was upset about the audition--it was forcing her to miss a math final--and hadn’t properly studied the lines. When it became apparent that Jemima was underperforming, her mother stopped the audition and pulled her daughter aside and shook her.

“What the hell are you doing? These are your father’s friends--stop embarrassing yourself. Mommy worked hard to get you this audition--where’s all the Dreyfus charm?”

Her mother convinced the casting director to let Jemima start over, but she was now not only scattered but angry. How dare her mother embarrass her? Ask her to skip school for a stupid audition they both knew she wouldn’t get? She was going to fail math this semester and for what? To be stared at by creepy old men looking for pretty teenagers to star in some glorified propaganda. Her mother gave her thumbs up from behind the casting director’s table.

“Miss Dreyfus, we’re waiting.” Both men at the table shuffled their clipboards.

Jemima felt something in her snap. Her pupils dilated and a strange warm feeling rippled across her body.

“I’m sorry, I’m ready now. You’re going to love my second take.”

And they did. It wouldn’t be until a few months later that she realized what the warm feeling meant. By the time they started doing appearances to promote her new show, Jemima was reveling in her barely controlled powers.

    ___

After the discovery of her powers (and subsequent breakout role), Jemima dropped out of school to pursue acting full time. She starred in (too) many B movies after her TV special before becoming the heroine of a three-part action blockbuster. She was a TV and movie darling--appearing on more talk shows and magazine covers than anyone else in her generation. She went to parties and went through a dark phase and chopped off her hair and still America (and the world) loved her.

A place in the post-war American film industry secured, Jemima became more selective about her roles and took time between them to take college courses. She distanced herself from a mother who would ride her coattails and a father more concerned about the check than his child. A solo empire was created--both in her acting and thralls. She always keeps her team small and her life as private as possible. Everyone who has ever worked for Jemima has been loyal and tight-lipped about her to a fault.

More recent iterations of her career have been leaning toward an arthouse/indie bend. She wants to start over as a serious actress. It was in pursuit of this that she met a man she would murder within 72 hours of becoming acquainted.

    ---

She’d met Jason while in Sydney attending a film festival. He’d described himself as a super fan when they met during a meet and greet with Australian fans. When she saw him again at an after party he’d been more than that. Jemima had gone outside to get some air and Jason had followed. It was exhausting to be around people all day and Jemima needed to clear her head. She walked and he followed to a pedestrian bridge that overlooked the bay. Jemima hadn’t realized he was there until the young man grabbed her wrist and spun her around.

“I love you. I want to be blood brothers—like in Blood Moon.”

Ripping pain in her hand. Jemima realized that he’d sliced a gash in her left hand and was trying to press it to a matching cut on his right. Her fan was trying to reenact a scene from her latest movie--a vampire-inspired indie horror film. Fear and anger bubbled up inside of her and Jemima felt the tempting sway of her powers dance at the edge of her mind. She tried to pull away, but the young man held her wrist like a vise. Her blood dripped down their joined arms and pooled with his on the concrete below. She felt a deep warmth spread from the top of her head to her toes.

“No—screw you, creep! Jump off a bridge.”

In her dreams, Jemima would remember saying “Maybe you should jump off a bridge.” But this was a wish more than reality. She had compelled the young man, Jason , to take his own life. He’d smiled at her in the blissed-out way that thralls did and then launched himself off the low railing of the walking bridge. He’d died instantly. She had gone home with a splitting headache and had nursed her hand. After she left Australia she told people the long scar was from an accident.

    “It’s from a climbing accident—while I was in Australia.”

Six months later, the physical scar faded, but Jemima still dreamt about that night. To know that her powers could go so far made her feel both invincible and pathetic. Waking up from nightmares in her Chicago high rise apartment became her new normal.
